Childbirth Education Class

This class is coming up this weekend at Eden Way Birth Center. Jen will be teaching.

"The class is around 12 hours total and is usually a mixed group of couples who are planning natural childbirth in different settings. Some home, some hospital, some birth center. I cover the same material for everybody because the hospital couples may be planning to labor at home for awhile, and knowing how things work at home gives them an advantage. For the out-of-hospital couples...knowing what's available/routinely done at the hospital takes the mystery out of it if transfer becomes necessary.

We will be doing an intensive weekend:
friday night from 6 to 9
saturday from 9 am to 5 pm
and sunday afternoon from 1 to 5
Often couples coming in from out of town will stay at a B&B and make a little getaway of it.

I will cover:
Patient rights and responsibilities
Choosing the right care provider for you
Communicating with your doctor or midwife
Anatomy and physiology
Stages of labor
Hormone cocktail
Typical hospital interventions (when they're appropriate or necessary, when they're NOT necessary, true risks and benefits, natural alternatives)
Natural pain relief techniques (including aromatherapy, hydrotherapy, massage, birth ball, acupressure, meditation and relaxation, rebozo tricks, etc)
Positions and tricks for correcting little problems
Writing a birth plan
typical hospital newborn care practices
home and birth center newborn care practices
What to expect postpartum
Breastfeeding basics"

Cost of the class is $90. It covers materials, refreshments, and access to the lending library. It is held at EdenWay Birth in Marshall, TX.
